CHAPTER FOUR

Wolves vs hunters

A few days before the wolves had left for the hunt Jack with his bloodlust for wolves he had convinced Josh, Jack’s cousin, Billy his best friend, Richard a hunter Luke and Steven a tracker to join the fight. By that time they’d all heard about the fight between Jack and Thomas he had left out the part where Lucy had mentioned there were others of his kind.

“Come on boys, pack for a couple of days and tell your loved ones we huntin’ elk.”

“When in reality we huntin’ something else?” Billy said with a pause. He wasn’t the brightest of the bunch but he was a good friend to the others. Steven spoke next while they sat around the wooden square table lit only by the lamp all of their shadows cast dark creeping shadows on the wall. Each one of the men picked had darkness seeped in the soul over time. By the end that darkness would be felt.

“The terrain is going to be mostly uphill cold at night mild temps in the forest pack thermals boys! Also we can hunt an elk and use a piece of it for a trap. You can bet they will smell it if you put a chunk on top of the ridge.” The rest of the men were quiet, soon they would all play a part. They dispersed back to their homes to rest, they planned to leave at high noon the next day. Only Luke would not have fitful dreams that night. He remained level headed even in the thick of it. Logical, calculating before he advanced. This wasn’t their first hunt they all packed with what they knew they deeded and they all knew how to start a fire. None of them had a watch but they knew how to judge what time it was. These were hearty men and like Lucy they would stop for the night and tell stories and kept watching in the night in rounds they were not the only predators. They headed off after saying goodbye, some for the last time and the men who came back would not be the same after. For a while all the men walked in silence at that point not much to talk about. After a while they began to tell each other the silliest jokes they could think of and since the women weren’t around some of them would make women blush. They began humming local songs they knew of too. The best part of the first night was not holding back. Before morning while Josh was on duty watching over the others sleep, Josh was listening to an owl hooting. Suddenly he realized the owl was quiet too quiet. In the distance he heard a twig snap a branch fell, now alert he went creeping to the others and roused them with three taps and one final tap. Danger was coming.

At once the team was awake back to back protecting each other wondering what was coming at them.
